COURSE DESCRIPTION

Module 3 built the operational systems and referral relationships that support a sustainable practice. Module 4 is where those systems meet the people you'll serve. This module covers everything that happens from the first contact with a potential client through the formal acceptance of an engagement. You'll work through the intake information framework that captures what you need to know before you can responsibly accept a case, the authority source and scope assessment that protects you legally, the trauma-informed communication principles that shape every conversation with clients in vulnerable situations, the capacity recognition skills you need to observe and document accurately, the stakeholder dynamics that complicate intake conversations with families and care teams, and the engagement decision framework for when to accept, decline, or refer a case. Module 4 is also where the Fiduciary Practice curriculum first treats interpersonal skill as a core competency rather than a soft skill. Trauma-informed practice, client-centered communication, and stakeholder management are taught with the same rigor as authority verification and engagement agreement drafting because they have the same impact on case outcomes. A fiduciary who handles intake communication poorly creates problems that no SOP can fix later. By the end of this module, you'll have an intake information framework, an authority assessment process, an engagement agreement structure, a working understanding of trauma-informed practice principles, a stakeholder dynamics framework for managing complicated family situations, and a clear decision framework for accepting, declining, or referring cases.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

- How to structure intake conversations using a four-category information framework that captures what you need to know before you can responsibly accept a case. - How to assess the authority source and scope of a potential engagement, including how to verify documentation and identify red flags before they become problems. - How to set expectations and boundaries with clients and stakeholders during intake, before the case begins, when expectations are easiest to establish. - How to draft an engagement agreement that confirms scope in writing and protects both you and the client from misunderstandings later. - What trauma-informed practice means for fiduciaries specifically, and how trauma-informed principles shape every conversation with clients who are often in crisis or grief. - How to recognize and document client capacity, including what to observe, what to record, and how to handle situations where capacity is uncertain or fluctuating. - How to manage stakeholder dynamics at intake, including conversations with adult children, care managers, attorneys, and other parties who have stakes in the case. - How to apply the engagement decision framework: when to accept a case, when to decline, when to refer to another fiduciary, and how to communicate each decision professionally.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

- Content slides with full audio instruction - Two applied case exercises walking through the Integrated Practice Cycle and a complex referral scenario - Reflection exercise on intake challenges specific to your practice focus - Five-question scenario-based knowledge review with worked answers covering stakeholder dynamics, authority assessment, engagement decisions, intake gaps, and trauma-informed practice - Connections to the Fiduciary Toolkit documents referenced throughout the module (toolkit available separately or as part of a bundle)

THIS MODULE IS FOR YOU IF:

You've completed Module 3 and you're ready to apply your operational systems to the client-facing work of intake and engagement. You want a structured intake framework that captures what you need to know before accepting any case, rather than improvising your way through first contact. You're looking for trauma-informed communication principles that you can actually use in fiduciary practice, not generic communication advice borrowed from other fields. You need a clear framework for the engagement decision: when to accept a case, when to decline, and when to refer. You want to handle stakeholder dynamics at intake (adult children, care teams, attorneys, contested family situations) with confidence rather than dread. You're new to fiduciary practice and following the curriculum sequentially, OR you're an experienced practitioner looking for specific content on legal and operational foundations. If you're new to The Fiduciary Method™ framework, we recommend completing the free Fiduciary Method Introduction course before starting this module.

PREREQUISITES
